Today, Louisville native James Edward Olliges, Jr. celebrates his 39th birthday. The My Morning Jacket frontman better known as Jim James is positioned among the most accomplished songwriters and recognizable vocalists currently occupying recording studios and commanding live stages. To celebrate James’ birthday today, here’s a look at his solo performance held last weekend in Las Vegas.
James played a solo set on April 22 at The Bunkhouse Saloon in Sin City as part of the American Dreams: A Festival event. His acoustic appearance blended MMJ favorites, selections from his two solo albums Regions Of Light And Sound Of God and Eternally Even and several choice covers.
A substantial portion of the recent Las Vegas set was captured in a video shared by Tom Sandberg. The footage includes covers of “America” by Simon & Garfunkel, “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince and “Funny How Time Slips Away” by Willie Nelson as well as “Changing World” by James’ side project New Multitudes. Also featured are renditions of My Morning Jacket’s “Wonderful,” “Bermuda Highway” and “Throwback (When We Were Young),” along with “A New Life” and “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” from Regions and “Here in Spirit” and “Same Old Lie” from Eternally Even.
