Happy Birthday Gregg Allman: ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’

By Scott Bernstein Dec 8, 2015 1:00 pm PST

Today marks The Allman Brothers Band co-founder Gregg Allman‘s 68th birthday as the vocalist/keyboardist was born in Nashville on this date in 1947. Gregg has spent the majority of 2015 on the road with his outstanding solo band and seems to have recovered from the health issues that popped up last year. We’re excited to see what the future holds for the legendary musician.

Arguably the best of the many The Allman Brothers Band’s March Madness residencies at the Beacon Theatre in New York City took place in 2009. The group was celebrating their 40th anniversary and welcomed a slew of incredible guests over the course of the 15- show run. One of the highlights of the run came on March 21, 2009; when The Allman Brothers were joined by The Juke Horns and Bruce Hornsby for a gorgeous cover of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Gregg and Bruce swapped verses on The Band classic. Watch how it went down:
