Along with issuing a new retrospective album today, veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen also celebrates his 67th birthday. The iconic New Jersey-native also has a new memoir Born To Run that takes a look back at his long and successful career. This week’s Full Show Friday focuses on a memorable performance held by The Birthday Boss back in 2003.
In 2002 Springsteen released the album The Rising that was his first officially recorded with his beloved E Street Band since 1984’s landmark Born in the U.S.A.. Brendan O’Brien produced the LP that featured such songs as “My City of Ruins,” “Waitin’ On A Sunny Day” and “The Rising,” and he was among the several guests to join Springsteen at the final stop of The Rising Tour on October 4, 2003 at Shea Stadium in New York.
Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was also a guest of The Boss that night at the home of the Mets. Other renowned musicians sitting-in that night included Gary U.S. Bonds (with his wife and daughter), Garland Jeffreys, Jon Landau and Willie Nile.
Dylan comes out to join the band on a rendition of his “Highway 61 Revisited.” Later in the show Nile and Landau sit-in on a performance of “Dancing In The Dark” while “Quarter To Three” also includes Bonds and Jefferys. The group of guests were then joined by O’Brien and Donnie Ienner for “Twist & Shout.” The show also featured the E Street Band and The Rising Tour premiere performance of “I Wish I Were Blind,” as well as takes on such favorites as “Because The Night,” “Rosalita” “ Born To Run” and others.
