Happy Anniversary ‘The Last Waltz’ – The Bill Graham Version

One of the greatest rock concerts in history took place at Winterland in San Francisco 39 years ago tonight, when The Band said farewell with a guest- filled performance known as The Last Waltz. The Band and a bevy of their friends and those who inspired them, as well as Neil Diamond, presented a four-hour spectacle put together by impresario Bill Graham.

Robbie Robertson enlisted famed film director Martin Scorsese to capture The Last Waltz and Scorsese wound up putting together a film that is almost always at the top or near the top of “Best Rock Films” lists. However Scorsese’s cameras weren’t the only ones to document what went down at Winterland. Graham’s team filmed the concert as well, which works out considering Marty’s movie doesn’t contain the whole event. Performances such as Bob Dylan guesting on “Hazel,” the show-closing “Don’t Do It” and a stellar take on “King Harvest” were all left on the cutting room floor by Scorsese.

With that in mind, watch the four-hour-plus version of The Last Waltz captured by Graham’s crew and shared in its entirety on The Music Vault:
