Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Dan ‘Lebo’ Lebowitz At The Warfield

Greensky Bluegrass headlined the famed Warfield in San Francisco on Saturday night. The five-piece had a few surprises in store for Bay Area “campers” including a guest spot from a local veteran of the jam scene.

Greensky Bluegrass opened with “Bring Out Your Dead” and “Past My Prime” ahead of a Paul Hoffman-sung cover of “Dustbowl Overtures.” The set rolled on with a handful of originals and then GSBG brought out ALO guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz for two songs to end the frame. First up was “Fixin’ To Ruin” before Lebo and Greensky brought the house down with a fine rendition of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac.

The quintet kicked off Saturday’s second set with “Miss September.” Up next was an extremely wild sequence as GSBG strung together “Broke Mountain Breakdown” and “Wings For Wheels” with the chorus of Mr. Mister’s 1985 smash “Broken Wings.” From there, the band played a “Hold On” with teases of “Smooth Criminal” and would again tease the Michael Jackson tune later during “Working On A Building.”

Jim James was in the house on Saturday night which may explain the “Victory Dance” quotes within the “Leap Year” second set closer. Greensky Bluegrass ended the evening with their standout cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.”
