Severe weather led to the delayed start and early end of Greensky Bluegrass' Wednesday night concert in Shelburne, Vermont. The jamgrass quintet made the most of their lone set during which they invited Vermont resident Ryan Montbleau to sing the GSBG debut of Ryan Adams' “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High).”
The soggy concert at The Green at Shelburne Museum started a little late after gates opened 45 minutes later than originally scheduled. Greensky Bluegrass played one long set at the scenic Vermont venue instead of their customary two sets. The decision turned out to be wise when heavy rain and lightning forced an end to the show after two hours.
The band opened with “Monument” and followed with their take on Cris Jacobs’ “Bone Digger” and their own “Better Off.” Singer-songwriter Ryan Montbleau then emerged for the aforementioned Ryan Adams cover featuring the apropos bridge “Ooh, the days the rain would fall your way.”
Ryan Adams wrote “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)” with David Rawlings. A studio version of the song was released in 2000 on Adams’ debut solo album, Heartbreaker. While Greensky had never played “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)” before, Montbleau has covered the song previously, including a version at “The Spot” aboard Jam Cruise 10 with Nathan Moore and Brad Barr.
GSBG moved forward sans guest with “Reverend” and the fitting selection of “Worried About The Weather.” A cover of “Freeborn” trailed a few songs behind and gave way to “The Four,” which bled into “Bottle Dry.” The five-piece capped the marathon set with a run of “Old Barns,” “Distracted” and “Kerosene.”
