Greensky Bluegrass ended an eventful series of three shows with a Saturday night performance at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. The band debuted a Phish cover to start the concert and later welcomed two members of Trampled By Turtles to sit-in.
On Saturday “Chalk Dust Torture” joined the ranks of Phish songs Greensky Bluegrass has covered that also includes “Rift,” “Down By Disease” and “Julius.” GSBG kicked off Saturday’s Denver finale with “Chalk Dust,” which was sung by Paul Hoffman and featured a distorted dobro solo courtesy of Anders Beck. Anders sported a “Make Phish Evil Again” hat for the occasion. The rest of the first set was bookended by tracks off Greensky’s recently released Shouted, Written Down & Quoted as “Miss September” followed “Chalk Dust” and “Run Or Die” closed the opening stanza.
Greensky began the second set with “Just Listening” and “Leap Year” before bringing out Dave Simonett (guitar) and Dave Carroll (banjo) of Trampled By Turtles. The pair of Daves played along as Beck and Hoffman call and responded during “Fo Sure Uh Huh.” Simonett then led GSBG and Carroll through the Trampled By Turtles classic “Victory.”
Last night’s second set was also highlighted by traditional bluegrass song “Reuben’s Train” played within a cover of “Handle With Care” by Traveling Wilburys and an inventive “Hold On” > “Tarpology” > “One Slip” > “Tarpology” > “One Slip” > “Tarpology” sequence. The night came to a close with an encore of Shouted, Written Down & Quoted’s “Past My Prime” and a cover of “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” by Bob Dylan featuring Simonett and Carroll.
