Along with Dead & Company’s Golden Gate Park concerts, another component of the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary celebrations this year involves The Grateful Dead Movie. The 1977 film is set to return to theaters and will screen on IMAX for the first time beginning August 14 as part of the “Meet-Up At The Movies” series.

While released in ‘77, The Grateful Dead Movie was captured during what appeared to be the band’s final shows at the time. The five night run took place at San Francisco’s Winterland in October 1974, with the final show billed as “The Last One.”

The Jerry Garcia co-directed film sees the Grateful Dead — Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Donna Jean Godchaux and Keith Godchaux — performing, interspersed with various glimpses at the burgeoning Dead Head culture. The Grateful Dead Movie also opens with a psychedelic animated sequence featuring some of the band’s iconic imagery.

The Grateful Dead Movie is now hitting theaters for the first time in eight years and on IMAX for the first time. After the screening, fans can stick around and watch the exclusive theatrical premiere of “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,” a bonus performance from the October ‘74 Winterland shows not included in the official film release.

“It was the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times,” archivist David Lemieux stated.

“Meet-Up At The Movies” tickets for The Grateful Dead Movie go on sale Friday, June 26 at 9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT. Head to MeetUpAtTheMovies.com for more info on tickets and screening locations.
