Watch Grateful Dead’s Jubilant ‘Franklin’s Tower’ From Halloween 1980

The Grateful Dead released video of “Franklin’s Tower” as the latest in their All The Years Live series. The clip is from the band’s Halloween 1980 concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

The Grateful Dead debuted “Franklin’s Tower” on June 17, 1975 at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. That show also featured the premiere of the legendary “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” trifecta. But as Dead archivist David Lemieux pointed out in his notes on the Halloween 1980 “Franklin’s,” the song wasn’t always attached to “Help” and “Slip.”

“From 1975’s Blues For Allah album, “Franklin’s Tower” had an interesting place in the Dead’s repertoire. It was joined to “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot” from 1975-1977, 1983-1985, and 1989, 1995, and was otherwise a free agent, popping up in various places throughout the setlist, in both the first and second sets.”

In the case of the three-set ‘80 Halloween show, a free agent “Franklin’s” came during the third frame. Watch below:
