Watch Grateful Dead Perform ‘Feel Like A Stranger’ At Brent Mydland’s Penultimate Concert

Grateful Dead shared video of “Feel Like A Stranger” as the latest in their All The Years Live series. The performance took on July 22, 1990 during the second of three shows at World Music Theatre in Tinley Park, Illinois near Chicago.

The concert was sadly keyboardist Brent Mydland’s penultimate show. The Grateful Dead’s longest tenured keyboardist died on July 26, 1990 from an accidental drug overdose three days after the three-night Tinley Park run, which wrapped the Dead’s summer tour.

Since joining the Grateful Dead in 1979, Brent Mydland distinguished himself as a spirited keyboardist and provided the high harmonies the band lost with the departure of Donna Jean Godchaux along with Mydland’s predecessor, Keith Godchaux.

While Mydland’s energy permeated the Grateful Dead canon during his decade with the band, the Bob Weir/John Barlow staple “Feel Like A Stranger” was a song on which Brent particularly shined as keyboardist and backing vocalist.

“Stranger” appeared on GD’s 1980 album, Go To Heaven, and was “one of the rare Grateful Dead songs that was recorded in the studio before it made its live debut,” as Dead archivist David Lemieux noted. Mydland’s use of synthesizer, bluesy piano licks and teaming with Bobby and guitarist Jerry Garcia on the “long crazy night” vamps were highlights of “Stranger” live.
