The Grateful Dead released video of Chuck Berry’s “Around and Around” as the latest in their All The Years Live series. The footage is from GD’s July 6, 1990 concert at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
Chuck Berry released “Around and Around” in 1958 as the B-side to “Johnny B. Goode,” another song from The Father Of Rock ‘n’ Roll the Dead covered along with “The Promised Land.” While GD only performed it once live, Chuck’s “Let It Rock” appeared on Jerry Garcia’s 1974 solo album Compliments and was a favorite in the JGB live repertoire.

The Grateful Dead debuted “Around and Around” on November 8, 1970 at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York and it remained a go-to rocker until 1995, as Dead archivist David Lemieux attested to in his notes accompanying the Louisville 1990 “Around and Around.”
Another Chuck Berry song added to the repertoire for the Grateful Dead to rock out on, “Around and Around” was played consistently from late 1970 until 1995. It was primarily a show-closer in 1978, was joined with “Good Lovin'” mostly from 1979 onward, but in Spring 1990 it became a stand-alone show closer again, in a new arrangement, as heard here.
