The Grateful Dead’s All The Years Live video this week features the late 80s rocker “When Push Comes To Shove.” The footage is from GD’s June 19, 1989 concert at the Bay Area’s Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
The June 19, 1989 “When Push Comes To Shove” marked the penultimate performance of the song. Dead archivist David Lemieux offered some context on the tune in his notes accompanying the video:
“When the Grateful Dead returned to the stage on December 15, 1986, after Jerry’s diabetic coma, the third song they played that night was a brand-new Hunter-Garcia song that was a fun, upbeat, rocking tune called “When Push Comes To Shove.” Along with “Black Muddy River,” also debuted that same night, the Dead now had enough new material to head into the studio to start recording In the Dark a month later, in January 1987. The Dead only played “When Push Comes To Shove” 58 times, with this one being the penultimate live version, going away for good a month later on 7/17/89 at Alpine.”
