Last night Gov’t Mule continued their Spring tour in support of their upcoming studio album Revolution Come…Revolution Go, with a stop at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. As become the norm for Mule over their last few shows, the Southern jam act welcomed out a guest to join them on a number of tunes.
Mule opened their two-set show with a run of “Blind Man In The Dark,” “Mr. High & Mighty” > “Mother Earth.” Next up was “Mr. Man,” which contained teases of Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” and “Unring The Bell,” that saw Warren Haynes & Co. reference the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.” Towards the end of the band’s opening set they welcomed out their old friend Ron Holloway, who added sax on a cover of The J.B.’s “Doing It To Death,” and longtime fan-favorite “Soulshine.”
The band opened their second set with a pair of songs off of Revolution Come…Revolution Go, and once again paid tribute to Chris Cornell with a cover of Soundgarden’s “Fell On Black Days.” The set continued with “Funny Little Tragedy,” that featured lyrics from The Police’s “Message In A Bottle” and “The Bed’s Too Big Without You,” along with a tease of Bob Marley & The Wailers “Get Up, Stand Up.” Gov’t Mule closed out the the show with a “Drums” segment followed by “Larger Than Life” > “If 6 Was 9” > “Larger Than Life,” and a cover of ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid.” Halloway reemerged for the last song of set for a take on “32/20 Blues,” that featured lyrics from Little Feat’s “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now,” and the augmented group teasing Beck’s “Loser.”
Gov’t Mule closed out the night with a take on their newest single “Dreams & Songs.” The band is off tonight, but continue their tour tomorrow with a show at The Pageant in St. Louis.
