Gov’t Mule Welcomes Guests In Houston & Warren Haynes Pens Tom Petty Tribute
Gov’t Mule concluded a swing through Texas on Monday night with a concert at the House Of Blues in Houston. For the fourth show in a row, the band was aided by Revolution Come…Revolution Go contributors Rey Arteaga on congas and Gordie Johnson on guitar for large swaths of the concert. Mule’s performance also included a Tom Petty cover, while this morning Warren Haynes penned a rembrance of the legendary rocker.
The quartet dusted off a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown” in the middle of Monday’s first set. Mule had last performed the song back on August 11, 2016. Arteaga and Johnson initially emerged at the end of the opening stanza to add to covers of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River” and Robert Johnson’s “32/20 Blues.” Rey returned early in the second set for Gov’t Mule’s first cover of “Empty Pages” by Traffic since October 29, 2016.
Arteaga came back out, along with Gordie Johnson, for a wild sequence that combined “Lay Your Burden Down,” “Smokestack Lightning,” “Unblow Your Horn” and “How Many More Years” to end the second set. Both guests were also on hand for a cover of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon” that served as the evening’s encore.
Warren Haynes posted a note about the loss of Tom Petty on Facebook. Haynes wrote about the influence Petty had on him, the depth of Tom’s catalog and how he kept the hits coming, the Gainesville native’s infamous battle with his record company and a batch of touring Warren and the Allman Brothers Band did with the Heartbreakers.
