High-quality video of Gov’t Mule’s guest-filled visit to Los Angeles has surfaced along with a full gallery of photos from Rob Chapman.
Gov’t Mule‘s visits to Los Angeles are always guest-filled affairs and last night’s show at the Wiltern was no exception. The band would wind up welcoming six musicians to the stage and honored Walter Becker, Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks by the time the marathon performance concluded.
Tuesday’s show started innocently enough with “Railroad Boy” followed by staples “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Beautifully Broken.” A pair of songs from Revolution Come…Revolution Go came next in the form of “Traveling Tune” and the title track. After “Unring The Bell” and “Endless Parade” it was time for a tribute to Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker.
Warren Haynes & Co. brought out guitarist Jimmy Vivino, former Pink Floyd sax wiz Scott Paige and Steely Dan keyboardist Jeff Young for “Dirty Work.” Mule last played the Steely Dan ballad way back on August 4, 2010. All three guests stuck around and drummer John Molo replaced Matt Abts for a jam in honor of Becker the ensemble used as an intro for a cover of Steely Dan’s “Don’t Take Me Alive.” The previous Mule version of “Don’t Take Me Alive” took place on September 27, 2014.
The second set began with a cover of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” featuring guitarist Eric McFadden. More tracks from Revolution Come…Revolution Go would lead into a “Trane” > “Eternity’s Breath” > “St. Stephen Jam” sequence. Gov’t Mule then were augmented by Dickey Betts’ son, Duane Betts for covers of “Whipping Post” and “Blue Sky.” The band and Duane weren’t done with the Allman tributes as the encore saw them joined by Vivino for “Melissa” featuring a “Mountain Jam” excursion within. Mule now heads to Texas for a series of shows.
