Gov’t Mule Welcomes Guests For ‘Dark Side Of The Mule’ Set In New Jersey

Gov’t Mule continued their series of dates with The Avett Brothers and The Magpie Salute at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey on Friday night. The Southern-rock act presented a guest-filled Dark Side Of The Mule tribute to Pink Floyd as part of their lone set that for the second night in a row saw them welcome guests throughout.

Warren Haynes & Co. got their night in the Garden State underway with a pair of tracks from their own catalog serving up “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Banks Of The Deep End.” The four-piece act then dug in on the music of Pink Floyd for the remainder of the night as they were joined by saxophonist Ron Holloway, multi-instrumentalist Torbjörn “T-Bone” Andersson and vocalists Machan Taylor, Mini Carlsson and Sophia Ramos throughout along with a handful of additional guests. Mule stuck to a similar script for night two of the run mixing in a handful of new additions with a core set of songs. Mule got the Floyd portion of the evening going with two songs that hadn’t been played at the tour opener delivering “One Of These Days” and “Echoes” from the seminal psychedelic rock band’s 1971 release Meddle.

Seth and Scott Avett reprised their role as backup singers on “Time” sticking around to add harmonies as the augmented ensemble offered up a “Breathe Reprise.” “Welcome To The Machine” from Wish You Were Here broke up a run of tunes that had also been seen at Jones Beach. Marc Ford and John Hogg of The Magpie Salute were once again invited out to assist on “The Nile Song” a night after they helped Mule on its live debut. Gov’t Mule closed out their night in Jersey with “Money” and a full rendering of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” with “Wish You Were Here” occupying the encore slot for the second night in a row.
