Gov’t Mule busted out a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” in Salt Lake City on Wednesday in tribute to Charlie Watts, who died at age 80 one day prior. “Honky Tonk Women” came during Mule’s summer tour opener at Red Butte Garden, where the band was co-headlining with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.
The quartet led by Warren Haynes kicked off the concert with a lone set in Salt Lake City. Gov’t Mule opened with a take on The Staple Singers’ “Hammer & Nails” and then paired beloved originals “Mule” and “Banks Of The Deep End.” Next came the group’s first “Honky Tonk Women” since December 31, 2011 as per Setlist.FM. Gov’t Mule had played The Rolling Stones’ 1969 single a total of six times. Warren penned a touching remembrance of Charlie Watts he shared on his social feeds after news of the drummer’s death was announced.

Gov’t Mule honored another late musician next, as they performed ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” at their first show following the death of bassist Dusty Hill on July 28. The band followed with Revolution Come…Revolution Go standout “The Man I Want To Be” and live staple “Thorazine Shuffle.” From there, Mule treated fans to a cover of Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam.” Oldie “Time To Confess” was the penultimate song of the set before Gov’t Mule capped the performance with an extended version of Haynes’ signature tune, “Soulshine.” The tour continues tonight at the Belly Up in Aspen, Colorado.
