Gov’t Mule & Members Of Blackberry Smoke Cover ‘Maggot Brain’ & ‘In The Pines’ In Rohnert Park
By Scott Bernstein Sep 1, 2016 • 7:03 am PDT
On Wednesday night Gov’t Mule and Blackberry Smoke brought the Smokin’ Mule Tour to Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park, California. Once again, members of BBS sat-in with the Mule on a collaborative encore and once again they played tunes they hadn’t performed yet this tour.
Gov’t Mule focused heavily on originals over the course of a career-spanning set that included such favorites as “Mr. High & Mighty,” “Thelonius Beck,” “Forevermore” and “Railroad Boy.” When the quartet returned for the encore they brought Charlie Starr with them. Starr and the Mule kicked off the encore with a cover of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” Gov’t Mule last played the Funkadelic classic way back on May 5, 2015. Bassist Paul Ill then came out to replace Jorgen Carlsson on “Where Did You Sleep Last Night (In The Pines)” to close the show. The tour continues tonight in Eugene, Oregon.
