Gov’t Mule resumed their summer tour on Wednesday at the Sprint Pavilion in Charlottesville, where saxophonist Ron Holloway and lap steel guitarist Chris Vos sat-in with the band. Vos was on hand with opening act The Record Company.
Mule bookended their two sets with “Traveling Tune” for the second time in five days. The quartet’s opening stanza also included the frequent pairing of “Game Face” and “Mountain Jam” along with a few tracks from their most recent album and a handful of classics. Holloway emerged at the end of the frame to contribute to a cover of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon.”

The Warren Haynes-led band went with a double dose of 2006’s High & Mighty to kick off the second set. Up first was “Brighter Days” and then Gov’t Mule busted out “Like Flies” for the first time since November 1, 2016. Holloway returned towards the end of the set to add sax to a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” that came between “Fallen Down” and “Traveling Tune.” Then, the saxophonist came back out with Gov’t Mule and Chris Vos for an encore featuring a cover of “Goin’ Out West” by Tom Waits.
