Goose resumed their winter tour on Wednesday with a concert at Bend, Oregon’s Midtown Ballroom. The band celebrated Groundhog Day by starting both sets and encore the same way and also debuted new original “Silver Rising” during last night’s show.
“Well, howdy,” multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach told the crowd upon taking the stage before guitarist Rick Mitarotonda added, “It feels like it’s been for two years” and Peter noted, “This is gonna be a great night.” Goose then launched into a cover of Duke Herrington’s “A Tribute To Gold” for the first time since its debut on June 13, 2021 at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. Next came “Life On The Shelf,” an original premiered last October in New York City.

Last night’s first set rolled on with a massive “Madhuvan” that spanned well beyond the 20-minute mark. The adventurous jam was led by Mitarotonda and saw Anspach play rhythm guitar. Goose’s rhythm section of drummer Ben Atkind, bassist Trevor Weekz and percussionist Jeff Arevalo laid the groundwork for a massive peak to bring “Madhuvan” to a triumphant conclusion. The ensuing cover of Blind Melon’s “No Rain” was also a well-jammed affair. Goose went on to end the set with the frequently paired “Jive II” and “Jive Lee.”
The second set began in the exact fashion as the first including both the pre-song banter and “A Tribute To Gold” cover. While last night marked the first time this tour Goose didn’t kick off the closing stanza with a new original, fans didn’t have to wait long for fresh material as the debut of “Silver Rising” followed “A Tribute To Gold.” The new tune was penned and sung by Rick Mitarotonda. An expansive “Creatures” came next and gave way to the band’s funky version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River.” From there the five-piece delivered “726” and took a “Drive” to bring the frame to its conclusion.
Goose repeated the prank honoring Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day film to open the encore, though this time they quickly worked “A Tribute To Gold” back into “Drive” to fake out the crowd. The quintet said farewell to Bend with a brief run through “Time To Flee.”
