After nearly two decades apart, CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse have revived their Gnarls Barkley project for Atlanta, a new album set for release on March 6 via Atlantic Records/10k Projects. The duo previewed what will be their final Gnarls Barkley record with its contemplative lead single, “Pictures.”
The singer and acclaimed producer first joined forces as Gnarls Barkley for their 2006 debut album, St. Elsewhere, which included the chart-topping single “Crazy.” Green and Danger Mouse then put out their sophomore LP together, The Odd Couple, in 2008. Now they will complete the trilogy and wrap the project with Atlanta.
Both members of Gnarls Barkley have kept busy since The Odd Couple. CeeLo Green put out two albums with his hip-hop band Goodie Mob in addition to four solo records, while Danger Mouse released three Broken Bells LPs with James Mercer of the Shins and produced recordings by A$AP Rocky, Parquet Courts, U2, The Black Keys, MGMT, Michael Kiwanuka and Beck, among others.
The lead single from the forthcoming Gnarls Barkley album finds Green reflecting on a formative experience in his hometown of Atlanta. “Pictures is like going back to square one – it’s a full circle moment,” noted CeeLo.
“The song came from a childhood experience,” Green continued. “I had a middle school principal who, every Friday would tell me to go when I would get to school. Without fail. I was in 8th grade and I would leave school and ride the train alone from 8am until 2:30pm. The hook of the song is literally about being on the train. When you are in transit it’s like a motion picture passing you by – staring out the window of the MARTA train.”
