Glen Hansard added a little extra to his set last night opening for Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Veteran guitarist Lenny Kaye joined Hansard onstage at MSG for a potent performance of the rock ‘n’ roll classic “Gloria.”
The 77-year-old Kaye emerged at the end of Hansard’s set, which was immediately preceded by Hansard bringing out singer-songwriter Josh Okeefe for an a capella rendition of “Foggy Dew.”

Kaye played guitar alongside Hansard and his bandmates on the garage rock anthem “Gloria,” written by Van Morrison for his 1960s band Them. Kaye recorded “Gloria” for inclusion on Patti Smith’s landmark 1975 debut album, Horses, and it is a staple of Patti Smith Group live performances. Kaye ad-libbed some lyrics about Hansard during last night’s collaboration at MSG.
Hansard and Pearl Jam return to The Garden for a second concert tonight. Watch audience-shot video Lenny Kaye performing “Gloria” with Glen Hansard below:
