Gene Ween Sings Grateful Dead’s ‘Stella Blue’ For Jerry Garcia

By Andy Kahn Aug 4, 2015 1:10 am PDT

Yesterday we told you about a cover of “Stella Blue” by the Grateful Dead that the Dean Ween Group performed at the Stone Pony on Saturday night – Jerry Garcia’s birthday. In a crazy coincidence Deaner’s partner in Ween, Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman sang the same song on the same night. Gener was backed by Connor Kennedy & Minstrel at the band’s Jerry Garcia birthday show/tuition benefit for the Paul Green Rock Academy held at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, New York on August 1. Connor is a fellow music teacher at the School of Rock along with Freeman.

Watch fan-shot video of “Stella Blue” featuring old school visuals performed live by hand, in real time, by Liquid Light Lab:

Ween had performed “Stella Blue” a number of times in the late ’90s and early ’00s. Listen to one such version:
