Earlier this month Warren Haynes teamed with The Avett Brothers to recreate a Jerry Garcia Band show from 1986 at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. The performance was the second of two Dear Jerry: Let’s Play 2 concerts. Fan-shot video of each and every song The Avetts and Warren played has finally surfaced on YouTube and we’ve compiled a playlist of all 16 covers.
This Is 30 saw Haynes and the Americana outfit treat a crowd to performances of the same songs the JGB played at The Stone in San Francisco, California on October 18, 1986. The original Jerry Garcia Band concert took place weeks after the Grateful Dead front man first returned to the the stage following a diabetic coma.
Warren and The Avett Brothers worked through the 12 songs the JGB played on October 18, 1986 as their main set on October 15th in Fairfax. Haynes and the band mixed Jerry originals such as “Run For The Roses” and “Deal” with a bevy of covers from the likes of Van Morrison (“And It Stoned Me”), Bob Dylan (“Forever Young,” “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and “Tangled Up In Blue”), Jimmy Cliff (“The Harder They Come”) and The Beatles (“Dear Prudence”).
The Gov’t Mule front man and The Avett Brothers returned for a four-song encore of JGB live repertoire staples. Up first was “Mission In The Rain,” which was followed by “Reuben & Cerise,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and the evening’s fourth’s Bob Dylan cover, “I Shall Be Released.”
Next up for The Avetts is a visit to Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday, while Gov’t Mule kicks off a short run at College Street Music Hall in New Haven this Friday as well.
