Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart along with Jeff Chimenti, Oteil Burbridge and John Mayer continued Dead & Company tour on Tuesday night at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta. The band served up a surprise free webcast, providing professionally-shot footage of the show which can be viewed below.

Dead & Company kicked off the night with a Weir-sung “Scarlet Begonias.” Though the sextet jammed on the transition that normally leads to “Fire On The Mountain,” they instead made a move for “Shakedown Street.” Burbridge led a short and funky bit of improv which gave way to “Dire Wolf.” Mayer was in the spotlight for “Dire Wolf,” while Bobby sang the “Tennessee Jed” that came next. A slow and throbbing “They Love Each Other” followed and then D & C ended the set with the pairing of “Black-Throated Wind” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.”

Last night’s second set began with a spot-on “Here Comes Sunshine” featuring vocals from John Mayer. An impressive “Playing In The Band” > “Uncle John’s Band” > “Playing In The Band” sequence was next and contained plenty of jamming. From there, the six-piece presented an emotional “Terrapin Station” with Mayer and Weir splitting vocal duties. “Terrapin” led into “Drums.” The Rhythm Devil explored a few different themes before Kreutzmann left Hart to play droning tones on The Beam. When the instrumentalists returned, they toyed around with a few riffs for the evening’s quick “Space” segment.

The biggest surprise of the night came out of “Space” as Chimenti kicked into “Milestones” by Miles Davis. While “Milestones” was a Dead & Company debut, both RatDog and The Dead had played the jazz tune in the past. Chimenti and Mayer swapped solos and at points each were soloing at the same time. Eventually “Milestones” faded into one of the last great Garcia/Hunter songs, “Days Between.” The sextet slowly worked through the Bobby-sung “Days” before ending the set with “Sugar Magnolia.”

While Tuesday’s show didn’t contain any overt dedications or mentions of Gregg Allman, Dead & Company encored with “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” as they did the night Allman passed away. After the show, John Mayer headed over to The Roxy for a “Controlled Danger” concert event with comedian Dave Chappelle.
