Phil Lesh & Friends’ series of shows honoring each year of Grateful Dead continued last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California; where the Dead bassist and his band used the same setlist the Dead did at Red Rocks on July 8, 1978.

Following a discussion about the year 1978 featuring Lesh led by Jay Blakesberg, Phil took the stage with guitarists Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh as well as keyboardist Rob Barraco, vocalist Elliott Peck and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford. The ensemble proceeded to perform a show based on the setlist from arguably the best show the Grateful Dead ever played at Red Rocks.

Included among the many highlights last night were the band’s recreation of the famed “Close Encounters Space” the Dead performed at the Morrison, Colorado venue; a stellar “Wharf Rat” > “Franklin’s Tower” > “Sugar Magnolia” sequence at the end of the second set and a three-song encore. The final song of the evening was a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London,” a tune the Grateful Dead only played four more times after the Red Rocks version.
