When Phish bassist Mike Gordon announced a run of shows with his band, he revealed keyboardist Robert Walter was one of two new members of the group (drummer John Kimock being the other). A founding member of The Greyboy Allstars and a Hammond B3 organ whiz, Walter has found himself involved in a host of musical projects over his career. In addition to leading his bands Super Heavy Organ and Robert Walter’s 20th Congress, and collaborating in the hardcore outfit Creedle, Walter has interacted with many of the top funk-jazz-jam artists around.

One of those interactions occurred last year at the Brooklyn Bowl. On August 29, 2014 Walter and his swirling keys were joined by drummer Joe Russo, bassist Andy Hess and guitarist Scott Metzger for a one-off gig in New York. Calling themselves the Brooklyn Bowl All Stars, the all-instrumental two set show included funky covers of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” and “Revolution” and The Band’s “Ophelia” in over two hours of playing. Recorded, mixed, tracked and posted by Eric McRoberts, the below soundboard/audience matrix recording captures a hint of the heat brought to The Bowl that summer night.
