In late 1970 PBS, then known as N.E.T. (National Educational Television), aired a special called San Francisco Rock: A Night at the Family Dog featuring Bay Area favorites Santana, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. Each band performed two songs for the special (counting the Dead’s “China” > “Rider” as one song) and then it came to a close with a SuperJam that saw Jack Casady, Jerry Garcia, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen and Carlos Santana come together for a blazing instrumental excursion.

There’s not much in the way of professionally-shot footage of each band from that era, so we’re thankful the hour-long special is available for viewing on YouTube and as a DVD release. Highlights include PigPen’s delivery of “Hard To Handle,” the Santana band’s jaw-dropping “Soul Sacrifice” and of course the SuperJam finale. Check it out:

Santana: Incident At Neshabur, Soul Sacrifice
Grateful Dead: Hard To Handle, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider
Jefferson Airplane: The Ballad of You And Me And Pooneil, Eskimo Blue Day
Super Jam: All Star jam with members of all three bands
