By Andy Kahn May 22, 2015 • 7:40 am PDT

Earlier this month Carson Creek Ranch in Austin, Texas hosted the 8th annual Levitation Austin Psych Fest that saw the reunion of one of rock music’s most influential bands, 13th Floor Elevators. Led by Roky Erickson, the 1960s band was one of the first to establish the psychedelic garage rock sound. Founded in 1965 but disbanded by 1969 after only four records, their appearance in Austin was their first in 47 years.

Early band members including bassist Ronnie Leatherman, electric jug player Tommy Hall, drummer John Ike Walton and guitarist, vocalist and Austin native Erickson, augmented by guitarists Fred Mitchim and Eli Southard and Roky’s son Jegar Erickson on harmonica and vocals, took the stage as the 13th Floor Elevators for the first time together in 47 years as festival headliners on Sunday, May 10. The 50+ minute set pulled from their debut and sophomore LPs, 1966’s Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and 1967’s Easter Everywhere. Check out fan-shot, still frame footage for a sense of what it was like to be on the floor in Austin for the full reunion set:
