Full Show Audio: Trampled By Turtles Begin First Tour Since 2016 In St. Paul

By Jeffrey Greenblatt May 5, 2018 10:57 am PDT

Friday was a day that Trampled by Turtles fans have been looking forward to since the band announced that they would be embarking on an indefinite hiatus at the end of October 2016. The Minnesota-based string act was marking not only their return to the road but was also celebrating the release of Life Is Good On The Open Road, their first studio album in nearly four years. The now six-piece band kicked-off the first leg of their world tour with a pair of sold-out hometown shows at that Palace Theatre in St. Paul.

Trampled By Turtles delivered a with a career-spanning 22-song show at the historic venue opening things aptly up with the title-track from their newly released record. After delivering tune the band’s lead singer Dave Simonett addressed the crowd saying “Hello, so good to see you again. Now that we got that first one out of the way now I feel like we can relax a little.” TxT then delivered a string of new songs to start the set with takes on “Kelly’s Bar,” “Annihilate” and “We All Get Lonely” and would go on to feature a total of ten of the album’s twelve songs throughout the night.

The bluegrass band also touched on seven of albums as they mixed their frenetic foot-stompers like “Help You,” “Wait So Long” and “Walt Whitman” with their more plaintive ballads like “Midnight On The Interstate” and “Alone.” While Trampled By Turtles stuck almost exclusively to their own material they did offer up one cover song as they delivered a take on Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From The Shelter” from the Minnesota-native’s seminial 1975 break-up record Blood On The Tracks.
