On Sunday night Dead & Company wrapped a two-night stand at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The site of many Grateful Dead concerts was once again filled with songs from the legendary band’s songbook and beyond as the group featuring Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann once again took the stage together at the outdoor Bay Area venue.
Weir was in charge of the show opening “Samson & Delilah,” while fellow guitarist John Mayer took the band through the subsequent “Brown Eyed Women.” The pair of guitarists traded singing lead through the rest of the set on “El Paso,” “They Love Each Other,” “Cassidy,” “Bird Song” and “Don’t Ease Me In” with bassist Oteil Burbridge adding harmonies.
The well-traveled trio of “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” kicked off the second set, followed by the familiar coupling of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain.” The Rhythm Devils were then given the floor to take the audience at Shoreline on a pulse-pounding excursion into percussive improvisation that lead to Weir, Burbridge, Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti adding their “Space” to the “Drums” sequence. Weir’s mighty “The Other One” roared out of the improv and was followed by a cover of Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” Mayer propelled the set closing “Casey Jones” and the band returned for a touching “Brokedown Palace” encore.
