Earlier this year moe. returned to the road after an indefinite hiatus as bassist Rob Derhak fought a victorious battle against cancer. The jamband stalwarts played a series of two-night stands spread across three weekends in February. Last night the Buffalo-birthed act kicked off their first extended run of 2018, which will see them move up and down the East Coast to play seven gigs over the span of nine days, with a sold-out show at The Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C.

moe. was making their return to our nation’s capital for the first time since 2015 when they played a three-night run split between two venues as part of their 25th anniversary tour. The five-piece band turned to Derhak to get the get night underway as he stepped up to sing lead on “Tubing The River Styx.” The track from their 2007 release The Conch began a nearly 25-minute seamless run that saw them stitch together “The Pit” and “Puebla.” “Seat Of My Pants” followed as they stretched the old-school favorite out passed the 12-minute mark. The first surprise of the night came next as moe. dusted off “Angel.” The Al Schnier-sung tune, which was debuted back in 2016 and has a distinctive Bruce Springsteen sound to it, was played for the just fourth time ever. A segue-filled stretch of “Water” > “Hector’s Pillow” > “Plane Crash” filled out the backend of the opening frame.

Rob once again got the nod to get things going in the second set as they opening things up with “LL3.” The Derhak-penned tuned, which was debuted during their first show back at The Capitol Theatre, features lyrics that seem to hint at his cancer-winning experience. The new tune weaved its way into a lengthy jam-filled stretch, which over the course of the next hour saw moe. segue from “Bullet” into “Kyle’s Song” with “Silver Sun” – a tune that they wrote for The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test show capping off the run.

“Don’t Wanna Be” followed as the newer tune was played for just the ninth time since it was first played in December of 2016. The band closed strong as the pairing of two songs that date back to the 1990s – “Jazz Wank” and “Timmy Tucker” – clocked in at over a half hour. moe. brought their night to an end with a two-song encore of “Not Coming Down” > “Okayalright.”
