This past weekend, groove-jazz greats Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood reassembled for a pair of rare performances at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. Audio of Friday’s first of the weekend’s two shows has surfaced and can be streamed below.
Guitarist John Scofield, keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood first collaborated twenty years ago for 1998’s A Go Go. Later, the foursome went on to release two more studio albums: Out Louder in 2006 and Juice in 2014. MSMW opened with “Sham Time” off Juice and then played the title track from A Go Go. The first set continued with the quartet’s version of “Light My Fire” by The Doors.

Though Chris Wood had difficulties with his rig as the opening frame reached its end, the band made the most of the situation and improvised while Wood fixed his gear. Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood’s second set was highlighted by a wild rendition of “Deadzy.” The group threw in a few covers including Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say” and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” before they brought the second set to a close with A Go Go standout “Hottentot.” For the encore, MSMW said farewell with a take on the New Orleans standard “Tootie Ma Is A Big Fine Thing.”
