In a recent chat with JamBase, guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo explained he was focusing his thinking, setlist-wise, on a series of upcoming shows in Vail with Brother’s Keeper. One of those performances took place on Thursday at Vail’s Shakedown Bar and a crispy audience recording of the show has surfaced.

Deaner teamed with the Vail-based band on a mix of Ween classics, songs from his solo repertoire and a pair of covers. The guitarist and Brother’s Keeper opened with “Did You See Me?,” a song Ween recorded for the sessions that yielded Mollusk which was finally released on Shinola, Vol. 1 in 2005. Melchiondo then channeled Jimi Hendrix on a cover of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Are You Experienced?” A pair of Ween gems came next: White Pepper’s “Bananas & Blow” and the La Cucaracha rocker “My Own Bare Hands.”

In 2016, Dean Ween issued The Deaner Album and the quartet fit a number of tunes from the LP into the set at Shakedown Bar including a run of “Garry” and “Exercise Man.” It was then back to the Ween repertoire for quebec’s “Transdermal Celebration” and White Pepper’s “Pandy Fackler.” Later this month, Melchiondo will unveil his second solo album, rock2. The LP was represented at Shakedown Bar by “The Ritz Carlton” and “Fingerbangin’,” which were split by Ween setlist staple “Buckingham Green.”

Deaner noted “Finally, a ballad” before the foursome launched into “Superstar” by Delaney & Bonnie. The guitarist put plenty of passion and emotion into his solo on the tune. Melchiondo and Brother’s Keeper then pulled “Mercedes Benz” off The Deaner Album before Deaner led the band on one of his signature songs, 12 Golden Country Greats’ “Piss Up A Rope.” The band then ran through “Help Me Scrape The Mucus Off My Brain” from the same album before saying farewell with the Allman Brothers-esque instrumental “Dickey Betts,” which featured impressive interplay between Deaner and BK guitarist Scott Rednor.
