The latest installment of the PBS Digital animated video series Blank On Blank stars late legendary guitarist and composer Frank Zappa. The five-minute vignette features audio from an interview the talented musician conducted with Howard Smith on June 6, 1971.

Zappa spoke with The Village Voice reporter at the enigmatic performer’s hotel room in New York City almost 45 years ago to the day. The interview touched on a number of what Zappa called “fads” including the Women’s Liberation Movement.

“I don‘t think that there‘s a girl around that would fit in with what we do,” Zappa told Smith regarding the prospect of a female in his band. That sentiment obviously shifted, as the AV Club points out, Zappa welcomed marimbist Ruth Underwood into The Mothers Of Invention around the time of this interview.
