First Phish From The Archives Magnaball Edition Airs

A Phish festival tradition continued on Thursday night when The Bunny aired the first of three From The Archives installments. Each From The Archives installment finds Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro digging deep into the band’s vault to broadcast gems from Phish history.

Kevin started off Thursday’s show the way he started the first installment of From The Archives way back in 1996 at Clifford Ball – with a live version of “All Things Reconsidered.” This time around he selected the take from August 2, 1993 in Tampa, Florida. The old-school feel continued with the airing of a “Tweezer” -> “Big Ball Jam” -> “Tweezer” sequence from Cornell University in Ithaca on November 22, 1992. Shapiro then busted out an important piece of Phish history when he played “Melt The Guns” > “Macaroni & Cheese Jam” from keyboardist Page McConnell’s second full show as a member of Phish, September 27, 1985 at Slade Hall in Burlington.

The episode’s first lengthy jam segment came in the form on the legendary, 35-minute “Mike’s Song” -> “Simple” from Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 16, 1994. Shapiro then dipped into 1997 for one of the more inventive versions of “McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters” in Phish history (June 25, 1997 – Lille, France). Next, it was back to 1993 for an intense and wild “Split Open & Melt” from August 26, 1993 in Portland, Oregon. Kevin brought the show to a close with the “If I Could” from Holmdel, New Jersey on June 28, 2000 – the only live version of the Hoist ballad Phish played between July 31, 1998 and June 2, 2009.
