Hear Father John Misty Debut New Song On Surprise Live Album

Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) gifted fans with a new solo acoustic live album on Christmas captured at the Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel​-​by​-​the​-​Sea, California on December 15. Live at the Sunset Cultural Center boasts a brand new song from Tillman, “Corpse Dance.”

The stripped-down outing, presented by (((folkYEAH!))), opens with a bevy of songs from Father John Misty’s first four albums beginning with the title track from 2015’s I Love You, Honeybear followed by “Nancy From Now On” off his 2012 debut under the Father John Misty moniker, Fear Fun. The early part of the set also saw FJM visiting his 2018 album God’s Favorite Customer (“Mr. Tillman”) and 2017’s Pure Comedy (“Ballad of a Dying Man”).

Tunes from FJM’s most recent studio effort, April 2022’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century, were also in the mix including “Goodbye Mr. Blue,” “We Could Be Strangers,” “The Next 20th Century” and “Chloë.” Additional favorite’s like “I’m Writing A Novel,” “Chateau Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)” “Total Entertainment Forever,” “Holy Shit” and “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings,” also cropped up in the set — laced throughout with Tillman’s witty and hilarious banter.

Following “Hollywood Forever,” Tillman asked the audience if there was anything they wanted to hear. When someone asked for a “Christmas song,” he replied “C’mon,” before singing a snippet of “Silver Bells.” After a few more requests were yelled out, Josh joked, “Thank y’all, thank you for those requests,” before adding “stupid little songs” and musing “found out my trash man is a flat earther today.”

“You wanna hear a new one?” he then asked much to the delight of the audience. “So just fill in the blanks with the most Wagner-esque wall of sound you can AI generate,” he said before diving into the new epic “Corpse Dance.”
