Accomplished guitarist Scott McCaughey recently suffered a stroke while on tour in San Francisco. A fund has been established to help cover medical costs for the co-founding member of The Minus 5 and touring member of R.E.M.

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for McCaughey reached its funding goal after fans contributed more than $88,000 in its first day. McCaughey remains in the intensive care unit but is reportedly stable. In addition to The Minus 5 and R.E.M., the Portland, Oregon-based McCaughey’s resume includes The Young Fresh Fellows, M. Ward, The Baseball Project, Tired Pony, Tuatara and others.

Here’s the note posted with the GoFundMe page:

As many of you know, Scott McCaughey has suffered a major stroke and is receiving treatment in San Francisco. To all of you who have expressed love and interest in helping him, we have set up this Go Fund Me account to help defray the steep costs of Scott’s medical bills and extensive ongoing physical and speech therapy in the future.

He is still in ICU and has a long, difficult road ahead to recovery, but with his unsinkable spirit (and with time and hard work) we know that he’ll come back from this and be back in your town rocking soon.
