Exclusive Premiere | Two Tracks From Jerry Garcia On Broadway
By Andy Kahn May 28, 2015 • 9:30 am PDT

As previously reported, the first installment in a new archival series celebrating Jerry Garcia’s 13 night run on Broadway in New York City, entitled On Broadway: Act One will be released on June 23. JamBase is pleased to bring you two exclusive songs featuring the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and Jerry Garcia Band respectively, from the the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on October 28, 1987.
The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band’s early and evening sets and the Jerry Garcia Band’s electric evening set at the Lunt-Fontanne were recorded surreptitiously to avoid the ire of the venue’s union leader who imposed a strict no-taping policy. The secret nature of the hidden recording rig made up of an early DAT recorder led to the matinee electric set not being recorded on the 28th. The acoustic lineup featured Garcia, bassist John Kahn, drummer David Kemper, fiddler Kenny Kosek, mandolinist Sandy Rothman and guitarist David Nelson. From the evening acoustic set, listen to the JGAB covering Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel #9”:
The electric lineup featured the same rhythm section of Kahn and Kemper with Melvin Seals on organ and Gloria Jones and Jaclyn Labranch on background vocals. The fairly rare Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia penned “Gomorrah,” recorded during the JGB evening electric set, can also be streamed below:
Historian Dennis McNally, who was the Grateful Dead’s publicist and official biographer, wrote an essay for the 3-CD set’s liner notes. On Broadway will also be available as a digital download as 256kbps MP3s, 16bit, 44.1 khz FLACs or 24bit, 88.2 khz FLACs. Head here to pre-order.
