California-based quartet ALO will release a new studio album, Tangle Of Time, on October 2. The follow-up to 2012’s Sounds Like This features 11 new tracks, including “Not Old Yet” which JamBase is pleased to debut exclusively below.
Featuring Zach Gill (keys/vocals), Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz (guitar/vocals), Dave Brogan (drums/vocals) and Steve Adams (bass/vocals), the quartet recorded Tangle Of Time with co-producer Dave Simon-Baker at Allegiant Records in San Anselmo, California. All four members individually contributed songs during the recording process, with “Not Old Yet” being penned by Adams, who shared this regarding the creation of the song:
The lyric ideas for “Not Old Yet” came initially from a place of trying to talk myself into the notion of not being too old to give up on those things in life that just continue to test and challenge – mundane things like bills and car maintenance, but also vital things like health and relationships. From that place of inspiration, I got more reflective and started thinking about our band and the many years we’ve spent working together. I also started thinking about my family, my nieces and nephews and how much life they have ahead of them, my parents and grandmother who “love the gigs” as they say.
The song started to get some angles to it and I liked the different ways of thinking about getting old, be it as people, our relationships, the things you carry through life. As I got closer to the finish line with it, I think I really wanted it to be an optimistic message – “it’s never too late to chase your dreams” kind of thing. The music fell into place after humming through some of the lines a bunch. I liked that the band related to it pretty easy. I was thinking about the band a lot while working on it – still kids at heart, not old yet, chasing this rock n’ roll dream!
I was super happy with how the recording turned out. We kept it pretty simple on the basic layers and then added lots of fun keyboard parts, vocal parts, percussion. I think this song may even be Lebo’s recording debut on bottleneck slide. As the themes of “time” started surfacing as real connective tissue for the album, “Not Old Yet” seemed like a great fit among the rest. Hope folks like it!”
