Love was in the air last night as Eggy finally visited Pittsburgh for a concert at Thunderbird Cafe & Music Hall. The band unveiled their take on the Tina Turner-popularized “The Best” to end their first set and turned the spotlight to the balcony, where fan Alex successfully proposed to fellow fan Erin.
Originally released by Bonnie Tyler in 1988, Tina Turner scored a worldwide hit with “The Best” the following year. The song, which was featured on Turner’s Foreign Affair album, was co-written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight.

“The Best” brought Eggy’s hour-long first set to a close. The band — guitarist Jake Brownstein, keyboardist Dani Battat, drummer Alex Bailey and bassist Mike Goodman — opened with the anthemic “Here And Now” before offering an “Apology.” An extended “Hux (Wit’ It)” followed ahead of staple “One Stop Shop” and the second-ever performance of ballad “Paper Bed.” The latter gave way to an explosive jam featuring fretboard fireworks galore from Brownstein.
Alex Bailey handled lead vocals on the Eggy debut of “The Best.” Dani Battat addressed the crowd mid-song:
“Alright Pittsburgh. How you feeling out there tonight?
We’re very excited because we have some very special people in the house tonight. Hey [Eggy LD] Jaws, can we shine a little light on our friends Alex and Erin? I think you’ve been waiting a long time to do this.”
Up in the balcony, Alex got down on one knee and popped the question to Erin. Alex pumped his arms in the air after she accepted. “She said yes!” Battat yelled before Eggy went on to finish “The Best” and the set.
Eggy’s second set was a seamless, five-song affair in which they strung together “Shatter,” “Figure It Out,” “Coming Up,” “Tom Corn Walker” and “Shatter.” The quartet showcased their improvisational wizardry throughout. The cover of Paul McCartney’s “Coming Up” featured teases foreshadowing “Shatter” and of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” while the group fit “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Tommy Can You Hear Me” quotes into “Tom Corn Walker.”
“It feels good to be here Pittsburgh,” Jake Brownstein told the crowd when the band returned for the encore. “It’s been a long and winding road to get here. We used to get messages being like ‘I guess Eggy hates Pittsburgh,’ but we love you guys,” Brownstein added of the band’s first and only performance in the area since a 2022 concert at Mr. Smalls Theatre. “Thank you so much for showing up. All good things in all good time.”
Brownstein promised it won’t be as long until Eggy gets back to Pittsburgh. Eggy tacked on a “Boom Or Bust” encore to say farewell to Yinz.
