Jason Isbell & David Hood Join Drive-By Truckers At ShoalsFest
Watch David Hood add to "Everybody Needs Love" and Isbell join his old bandmates for "Heathens" and "The Day John Henry Died."
Drive-By Truckers welcomed former member Jason Isbell and frontman Patterson Hood‘s father, David Hood, during their set at ShoalsFest on Sunday. The Isbell-curated event was held at McFarland Park in Florence, Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
The band opened their set with “Lookout Mountain” from 2004’s The Dirty South and then turned to 2008’s Brighter Than Creation’s Dark for “A Ghost To Most.” A pairing of “Tornadoes” and “Women Without Whiskey” was followed by David Hood’s guest appearance. Patterson exclaimed, “This has been one of my favorite days of my entire life” and added, “today’s been about the most perfect day I’ve ever had” before introducing his father. David Hood, a member of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section “The Swampers,” played bass on a cover of Eddie Hinton’s “Everybody Needs Love.”
Drive-By Truckers went sans guests for “Marry Me.” Then, Isbell emerged for “Heathens” and “The Day John Henry Died.” Patterson Hood brought out Jason, who was a member of DBT from 2001 – 2007, after telling the crowd about his first meeting with Isbell. “I had just written this song and I played it for him,” Hood recalled. “We had just met and he was this young kid. He was so fucking gifted and talented. I played him this song and he liked it. So at any rate I wanted him to come out and play it with us tonight,” Patterson said regarding Decoration Day standout “Heathens.” Keyboardist Scott Danborn also contributed to the tune.
Jason went on to lead his former band through “The Day John Henry Died,” a song Isbell wrote for The Dirty South. Drive-By Truckers followed Isbell’s guest appearance with “Where The Devil Don’t Stay” and “Angels And Fuselage” to close their set.
