Dopapod honored current Nashville resident Billy Strings by debuting a cover of the guitarist’s “Dust In A Baggie” in Music City on Friday night. The quartet’s “Dust In A Baggie” premiere came at Basement East on the same day Billy's String The Hall run was canceled at the nearby Marathon Music Works after a member of the crew tested positive for COVID-19.

Friday’s concert was the last show of fall tour for Dopapod. The band’s inventive “Dust In A Baggie” cover was played in the middle of the first set. Dopapod opened with staple “Flipped” and then looked to 2019’s Emit Time for the studio album’s lead single, “Numbers Need Humans.” A 30-minute “Grow”/”Vol. 3 #86” pairing followed.

Dopapod continued the frame with “Dust In A Baggie.” The four-piece started the cover sung by guitarist Rob Compa in a similar tempo to Strings’ version but dropped into a funky, discofied jam to make the song their own. After working over the groove, Compa led the band to a huge peak before closing out “Dust In A Baggie” at the same tempo in which they started the song.

“I know a lot of you guys traveled far and wide for Billy Strings tonight, I’m so sorry about what happened,” Compa told the crowd before adding, “We’re glad you’re here” and asking fans to support Nashville Rescue Mission, the beneficiary of String The Halls. Dopapod then tore through “Super Bowl” and fit the “Dr. Mario Theme” within “Nerds” to end Friday’s first set.

Dopapod kicked off the final set of the tour with expansive versions of “Velcro,” “Trapper Keeper” and “Mucho.” Next came “Hi Doggie” before the band capped the frame with a +20-minute “FABA.” For the encore, the quartet followed “French Bowling” with a cover of Styx’s “Come Sail Away.”
