The Disco Biscuits officially began a new era on Halloween at Hulaween, performing publicly for the first time with drummer Marlon Lewis. The two-set appearance at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida, came less than one week after the confirmed departure of longtime drummer Allen Aucoin.

Co-founding members, bassist Marc Brownstein, guitarist Jon Gutwillig and keyboardist Aron Magner, previewed the Hulaween performance with a mini-documentary video, titled “I think I see the future,” recorded recently at Spice House Sound in Philadelphia. Lewis, who performed alongside Brownstein in the band Star Kitchen, was tasked with playing drums for the Disco Biscuits after Aucoin’s 20-year tenure with the band.

Hulaween attendees were treated to a Halloween “Rock Candy” opener, ushering in a new Bisco era. The four musicians segued into “Country Royale,” which showcased their improvisational approach with Lewis manning the drums. After nearly 17 minutes of “Country Royale,” they then returned to complete “Rock Candy.” Another song sandwich started with “Helicopters” transitioning into “Dino Baby” and then “Orch Theme,” before circling back to “Helicopters” to close out Lewis’ first set behind the kit.

A similar bookended approach was utilized for the second set that began and ended with “Caterpillar,” and saw the foursome further stretching out into improvisational territory. After taking “Caterpillar” for an initial 15-minute excursion, the first appearance of “Neck Romancer” of the year reached the 10-minute mark before moving into an even lengthier “The Deal.”

The uninterrupted sequence continued with an inverted rollout of “Portal To An Empty Head,” which dipped into various sonic spaces while lasting over 16 minutes, and eventually led back to the set-opening “Caterpillar.”

The Disco Biscuits underwent their transformation into Tractorbeam for a late-night Hulaween set that included multiple debuts by the instrumental dance-oriented project harnessing Ableton Live.
