Co-founding The Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts will return to the stage when he performs with his band at the Macon City Auditorium in Macon, Georgia on May 17. The 74-year-old Betts last played live in 2014 and has a batch of additional Dickey Betts Band tour dates in the coming months, including stops at Florida Jam and The Peach Music Festival.
This edition of Saturday Stream puts a spotlight on Betts and his contributions to The Allman Brothers Band songbook. The Spotify Playlist presented this week compiles live recordings of Betts during his stint with the Allmans as well as selections from shows performed with his solo group Great Southern.
Betts was responsible for writing many of The Allman Brothers Band’s most well-known and commercially successful hits, including “Blue Sky,” “Ramblin’ Man” and the Grammy Award-winning instrumental “Jessica.” Dickey composed the instrumental jam vehicle “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and other ABB favorites like “Southbound” and “Revival.” The playlist features Betts with various lineups of the legendary group, playing alongside original guitarist, the late great Duane Allman and with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks.

The playlist continues with highlights from the Dickey Betts & Great Southern performances on the German music television show Rockpalast in March 1978 and again in July 2008. The 1978 group featured a lineup of guitarist Dan Toler, bassist David Godflies, keyboardist Michael Workman and drummers David Toler and Dani Sharbono. The 2008 lineup saw Betts joined by his son Duane Betts on guitar, Andy Aledort on guitar, Pedro Arevalo on bass, Michael Kach on keyboards and Frankie Lombardi and James Varnado on drums. The ‘78 lineup with vocalist Mimi Hart is also featured on selections from an appearance in New York City The Calderone Concert Hall in August of that year.
