Dave Matthews Band played the first show of a two-night run at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday night. Both concerts featured several special guests, with guitarists Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks of Tedeschi Trucks Band among those who joined the band on night one.

Tedeschi was the first to emerge on Friday and kicked off her time on the MSG stage by joining frontman Dave Matthews on a cover of The Band’s “The Weight.” Trucks then came out and joined his wife in augmenting a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” in the typical DMB arrangement.

Before “Watchtower,” Tedeschi told the crowd she and Matthews have been friends for 24 years, thanks to being introduced when they both were on the Farm Aid 1999 lineup. After “Watchtower,” Tedeschi exited and Trucks remained for a subsequent 12-minute “Lie In Our Graves” excursion.

Later in the set, Saturday Night Live Band bassist James Genus stepped onto the MSG stage for a performance of “#41.” Recent guest player, trombonist Trombone Shorty, once again sat in with DMB, helping out on The Beatles “Come Together,” which was the first time the full Dave Matthews Band performed the song (a previous performance was absent some band members due to COVID).

Acclaimed jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis was the final special guest to perform with DMB on Friday. Faddis and Trombone Shorty accompanied DMB trumpeter Rashawn Ross and saxophonist Jeff Coffin on “Jimi Thing” and “Brick House,” with Faddis sticking around for “Warehouse.”
