Famed guitarist Eric Clapton is set to issue his 23rd studio album entitled I Still Do on May 20. For the new release, Clapton reunited with producer Glyn Johns who produced the former’s widely successful and critically lauded Slowhand album in 1977. This week’s Sunday Cinema focuses on an era of Clapton’s career that came before Slowhand, namely his Derek & The Dominos outfit from the early part of the 1970s.
Along with Clapton, rounding out The Dominos were keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, drummer Jim Gordon, bassist Carl Radle. The group issued one studio album, 1970’s acclaimed Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, that included contributions from guitarist Duane Allman. They also made one live television appearance, performing as musical guests on The Johnny Cash Show, which was taped in Nashville on November 9, 1970.
Derek & The Dominos performed the songs, “It’s Too Late,” “Got To Get Better In A Little While,” “Blues Power” and “Matchbox” which also featured Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins sitting-in. Below is video footage of the two songs that were aired, “It’s Too Late” and the collaborative “Matchbox” from the The Johnny Cash Show:
