Deftones played their first show in Japan since 2016 on Monday at Tokyo Garden Theater in Tokyo. The Sacramento band drew from across their catalog, including three tracks from their latest album, private music.
Deftones released private music — their 10th studio album — last year and quickly made songs from the record part of their live setlists. The band has been performing tracks from the Grammy-nominated record on an expansive World Tour that has taken them through North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and now back to Japan. private music was the first Deftones album to feature Fred Sablan, who joined as touring bassist after Sergio Vega’s departure in 2021.
Frontman Chino Moreno and his bandmates opened the Tokyo set with “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” from 1997’s Around the Fur and worked through 18 songs before a three-song encore. The night drew from eight studio albums, with private music represented by “milk of the madonna,” “my mind is a mountain” and “infinite source.”
The main set closed with “infinite source” before the band returned for an encore of “Cherry Waves,” “My Own Summer (Shove It)” and “7 Words.”
Deftones perform at Zepp Osaka Bayside in Osaka, Japan today (Tuesday, May 19).
