Deftones released private music — their 10th studio album — last year and quickly made songs from the record part of their live setlists. The Sacramento band has been performing tracks from the Grammy-nominated record on an expansive World Tour that has taken them through North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, with more dates still to come.

private music was recorded across sessions in Nashville and California, and produced by Nick Raskulinecz — who previously worked with the band on 2010’s Diamond Eyes and 2012’s Koi No Yokan. It’s the first Deftones album to feature Fred Sablan, who joined as touring bassist after Sergio Vega’s departure in 2021 and co-wrote and played on the record.

“I like the exclusivity of the name,” vocalist Chino Moreno told Apple Music about naming the album private music. “It feels restricted, maybe naughty. It has all these connotations. But it was the name of the folder on my desktop where I would put stuff while we were working on all the songs.”

Of the album’s 11 tracks, eight have made it into live setlists, giving fans a significant look at how the new material translates to the concert experience.

The most-played private music songs live are “my mind is a mountain,” “infinite source” and “milk of the madonna.”

Those being the most played coincides with “my mind is a mountain” being the album’s lead single, logging over 25 million streams globally, while “milk of the madonna” preceded the album’s release as a second single. “infinite source,” the first song written for the album, has proven equally durable in the setlist.

“ecdysis,” “locked club,” and “cut hands” have also become setlist regulars. “souvenir” has appeared in multiple sets as well, giving concertgoers a live version of one of the album’s deeper cuts. “i think about you all the time” is the rarest of the live private music tracks, with the fewest performances out of the songs that have been brought to the live stage.
