Dead & Company got their Summer Tour 2019 underway Friday night at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The biggest surprise of the night was the D&C debut of “Mama Tried.”
The band kicked off the first set with “Playing In The Band” into “Shakedown Street,” both sung by Bob Weir. After guitarist John Mayer led the band on vocals through “Brown-Eyed Women,” Dead & Co. debuted the Merle Haggard classic and Grateful Dead live staple “Mama Tried.” The frame also contained “Peggy-O,” “It Hurts Me Too,” “Black-Throated Wind” and closed out with “Casey Jones.”

The second set opened with the classic pairing of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain,” with bassist Oteil Burbridge handling lead vocals on the latter. John Mayer took the mic for “Althea” followed by a monster, continuous block that included “Estimated Prophet,” “Eyes Of The World,” “Drums” (featuring Rhythm Devils Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart), “Space,” “The Wheel” and “Wharf Rat.” The second set concluded with “Sugar Magnolia.” The band emerged for an encore of “The Weight” by The Band with Mayer, Weir, Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti all lending their voices for a verse a piece.
